Birmingham picnic dinner

30 Alabama chefs and farmers team up for Graze: Birmingham picnic dinner.

Thirty Alabama farmers and chefs will partner with each other for a farm-to-fork picnic dinner this Sunday evening, Sept. 17, outside Birmingham’s Avondale Brewing Company.

The dinner, Graze: Birmingham, pairs an area farmer with a local chef, who team up to create a special dish prepared specifically for the guests at Sunday’s picnic.

The third annual event benefits the Alabama Sustainable Agriculture Network, a grassroots coalition of producers and supporters of locally, ecologically and ethically raised food from around the state.

“Graze is all about good food, and about cultivating and celebrating the talented folks who produce it,” Alice Evans, ASAN’s executive director, says in a media release. “We want to provide a platform for collaborations between farmers and chefs who are equally committed to quality, craft, and to growing a vibrant local food system. Those kinds of collaborations can give way to lots of positive things: thriving, resilient communities, economic development, not to mention amazing food.”

The farmer-and-chef pairs will serve their dishes under tents in the backyard of Avondale Brewing Company, and guests may “graze” from one tent to the next, sampling as many as 15 dishes — such as tart zebra tomatoes in a signature salad, rabbit gumbo, roasted pork with garlic and oyster mushroom cream sauce, and flaky pastries with muscadine butter.
