Avondale Common House to open Wednesday serving new takes on bar food.

A new eatery will open Wednesday offering creative takes on classic bar foods.

Ellen and William Rogers are opening Avondale Common House and Distillery at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the former space of the Wooden Goat, at 4100 3rd Ave. S.

The couple met at 26 and Ocean in Five Points South, where she was the general manager and he was a sous chef. She moved on to help open Skycastle in Lakeview; he went on to cook for Iron City.

“We want it to be a place where people come and hang out before a show, or you come with your girlfriends, but also to be comfortable bringing your children,” Ellen Rogers said. “It’s a place where you come all the time, not just where you go for your anniversary or your birthday.”

The restaurant offers new takes on classics, like bourbon maple wings ($10), fried green tomatoes made with crispy pork belly and tomato chutney ($10) and apple pie nachos made with cinnamon sugar chips, spiced apples, caramel and vanilla whipped cream ($8).

It also promises to be vegetarian and vegan friendly with offerings like a vegan buffalo cauliflower po’boy ($9), and the Alabama-grown veggie plate that includes summer squash gratin, charred tomatoes and house corn bread with a smoked tomato vinaigrette ($15).

The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It’ll serve brunch from from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., which will include a Bloody Mary bar, on Saturday and Sunday, but it won’t be open for dinner on Sunday. It’ll be closed on Monday.

“We wanted it to be young and playful,” Rogers said. “Everything has really bright colors.”
